Cell Biology and Biochemistry is aimed at A level students and should be used as a workbook and revision guide. Its aim is to “complement the texts written for your particular course” and by providing superb illustrations surrounded by concise and informative text I feel this book fulfils this aim well.
The book is divided into five chapters; Molecules of Life; Cell Structure; Cell Membranes and Transport; Cellular Energetics and Processes in the Nucleus. At the beginning of each chapter the learning objectives are listed, these give more detail on the chapter content and highlight key words and phrases. These objectives are followed by suggested reading: textbook, periodical and internet references are given. As this book is primarily a revision guide the suggested additional reading is very helpful, especially where further reading is needed for a full understanding of the topic covered.
Each page of subject content gives very clear and detailed labelled diagrams and where possible labelled photos which I found very useful and informative. Although the pages contain a large amount of information the presentation is clear and easy to follow, text is concise but informative with key words in bold. Most pages contain questions to complete within the book summarising the information on the page, a useful exercise to assess understanding.
Cell Biology and Biochemistry is printed in black and white and although the layout is clear the use of colour would make the pages eye-catching.
Biozone website has a sale price for this workbook of £6.95, as a revision guide and workbook I feel this is good value and would recommend it to students or teachers outside their specialism.
