The VCE Biology BIOZONE suite of resources are innovative, appealing, and represent biology with clarity. These resources scaffold biology learning by enabling quality pedagogy for teachers and therefore students. I have enjoyed using this resource with my preservice teachers who use the resources with two hats on – as future educators but also as learners of biology.


I especially like the chapters with detail and exemplification of investigations including the identification of the key science skills throughout.

“I have always been an advocate of the BIOZONE books as a VCE Biology teacher and as a Biology teacher educator.”


The books are visually spectacular and skilfully crafted with amazing attention to detail. I am now even more excited that the new editions now available in colour. The images in the books are generously dispersed and are a key strength of the resource. 

The images are detailed yet uncomplicated, with the authors skilfully including relevant annotations to engage, explain and elaborate often complex biological ideas. It is amazing how much information is included on each page.

In the latest editions, the inclusion of a ‘key idea’ on each page, focus the learning intentions into one or two sentences. This makes the key take way message loud and clear for learners.

The variety of student questions and graphic organisers encourage lower and higher order thinking. Many questions encourage the use of critical thinking, such as comparison or application of ideas.

The new editions now also include more opportunities for practical work, such as modelling, generating and analysing first and second-hand data to help students better understand often abstract and complex relationships and patterns. Sections of the book are able to be removed and manipulated, enabling students to consolidate ideas and reduce worksheet creation and copying costs for teachers and schools.

I really like the way rich and relevant contexts are continually added to subsequent versions, keeping pace with the ever-evolving world of biotechnologies. Real and relevant images connect science concepts to the learner’s everyday world. Case studies and diverse sciencebased examples are used frequently to connect the learner with relevant science contexts.

The BIOZONE books are also carefully signposted for ease of navigation. Reference points for teachers and students signal the application of various science inquiry skills and making important connections between separate pages of the book. Key terms are listed in each section, supporting students to develop their own glossaries and learn the diverse vocabulary used in biology.

Chapter review pages encourage student selfreflection and assessment and support students to connect smaller ideas to develop larger conceptual networks. End of Area of Study synoptic questions focus on specific aspects of the new VCE Biology study design offering practice with extended answer responses and application style questions.
